SNOW WHITE, TIBBITS OPERA HOUSE, 2025
Director, Sound Designer: Jake Ryan | Scenic Designer: Andrea Imsland | Lighting Designer: Lily Edwards Technical Director: Sebastian Dahlgren | Costume Designer: Hayden Elowsky | Props Master: Stella Jones
There is a contrast between the cold, dark castle of the Evil Stepmother and the warm, welcoming home of the dwarves. The forest serves as the transition between both, it is both cold and warm, it is mysterious and unknown. The set extends into the house, allowing the children who attend the production to feel like they are a part of the story, as well. The playing space is very shallow, so each set piece is designed to be able to be utilized in different ways, taking up as little room as possible so that the actors can use as much space as they need to tell the story, with all of its fights, dancing, and excitement, in an engaging way.
Research
For the Stepmother’s castle, I was predominantly influenced by the work of Gustave Doré and ravens. They both evoke the dark, looming presence we wanted the castle to feel like, as the Stepmother is looming and in charge of everything that goes on within its walls.
Concept Sketches
Since we had such little depth on the stage to use, I worked with as minimal of an amount of set pieces to use, as well as as shallow of set pieces as possible. There was lots of preliminary work to decide how bringing the set into the audience would play out.
