The birch trees were sculpted using upholstery foam, cardboard, and paper to provide depth. These mediums were encased in muslin dipped into a scenic dope mixture to create a solid, paintable surface. A scumbled base of white and tan created the bark of the tree. A mixture of darker browns were applied with a palette knife to show the wood beneath, where the bark has peeled away.
The gold metal treatment was achieved using a goop mixture on top of a decorative carved foam to prepare the surface for paint. A yellow base color was applied, and then layers of watered down green and brown were used to create dimension and aging. Accents of metallic gold paint were applied last to provide the illusion of gold.
